Background Information: Study Results on the Anti-inflammatory and Skin Improving Effects on Atopic Skin

A study from Danz et al. (2001) documents the impact of woad extract: In vitro experiments on keratinocytes and mast cells demonstrate the effect of the main components. The illustration shows the attenuation of proinflammatory interleukin-6 expression after 24- and 48-hour irradiation. The pre-treatment reduces the inflammatory reaction even more effectively. Interestingly, when compared with hydrocortisone, the interleukin-6 expression is even stronger reduced after 24 hours and are similarly effective after 48 hours of exposure to irradiation.

Study principle: Keratinocytes under UV irradiation react in the same way as keratinocytes during inflammation – with the release of interleukin-6.
